Learning Through Experiences in Oedipus Rex by Sophocles

In every piece of writing, the characters go through many obstacles or changes. Oedipus Rex shows many downfalls of different characters and what they do to overcome these obstacles. The main character to focus on is Oedipus as the story revolves around him and the truths that come to ruin his life, his wife’s life as well as the lives of his children. Through ones rash decisions, pride and blindness to the truth, one can experience a downfall which will in turn lead one to suffering and maybe even self mutilation. Learning lessons and growing from those lessons are how people in society live and become who they are. Oedipus’s rashness of character and pride he leads himself to his own downfall. Oedipus gets angry very easily and does not treat others how he wants to be treated. He feels pity for some of the people but is quite arrogant towards the petitioners. â€Å"Ah my poor children, what you come to seek / is known already – not unknown to me† (Sophocles 3). Through Oedipus’s nonchalant disregard of the petitioners concerns, it shows that he really does not care that much about what the people feel. He claims to already know what they are worried about and is sort of pushing what they say to the side. He is arrogant and believes he is above them and is full of himself in the sense that he thinks he knows everything already when in reality he is disregarding important events and facts.
